Is the Extended Warranty Actually Worth It?
This is the question most articles skip. Let us answer it honestly.
Kia’s standard manufacturer warranty in Pakistan covers 3 years or 100,000 km (whichever comes first). The extended warranty kicks in after that standard period ends, giving you additional coverage against mechanical failures.
Here’s when it makes financial sense to buy it:
- You plan to keep the car for 5 or more years. If you sell before 3 years, the extended warranty has no value to you personally (though it may help resale).
- Your car is a Sportage or Sorento, more complex engines and electronics mean higher repair bills when things go wrong outside warranty. A single gearbox service on a Sportage can cost Rs. 80,000 to 150,000. That makes a Rs. 52,000 warranty look cheap.
- You don’t have an emergency fund for surprise car repairs. The warranty gives you predictable costs.
When it may NOT be worth it:
- You own a Picanto and service it regularly at authorized centres. Picanto is mechanically simple and historically reliable, extended warranty claims on it are low.
- You plan to sell before the standard warranty expires.
- You drive very low mileage (under 5,000 km per year).
Basic vs Standard Package, Which Should You Choose?
The Basic package covers core mechanical components, engine, transmission, drivetrain. The Standard package adds more coverage including electrical systems and additional components.
For the Sportage QL and Sorento UM, we recommend the Standard package. These vehicles have more complex electronics and the extra Rs. 12,000 difference (Rs. 40k vs Rs. 52k) is well worth broader coverage.
For the Picanto, the Basic package at Rs. 20,000 is sufficient for most owners. The Picanto’s 1.0L engine is straightforward and most issues tend to be minor.
